Spring 2

The children have been busy learning about length and height. We have explored vocabulary such as longer, narrower, taller, shorter, longest, shortest... They used measuring tapes to measure parts of their bodies. We tried to find out who had the longest finger in class and how many steps it would take to walk from one end of the hall to the other. The children did a good job of estimating how many steps it would take, comparing this to the actual steps they took and then figuring out why everyone had different answers: we all have different sized feet!

Spring Term

Year 2 have been learning about money and have used concrete objects to recognise coins and notes and ideas such as 'more than', 'less than' and 'equivalent'. To consolidate their learning, they ended the unit with a 'shopping' lesson during which they were given (fake!) money and were able to buy some items. They had to work with a partner to see which items they would be able to buy and whether they would share the money equally OR share their purchases. This made for lots of interesting discussions and calculations.

The children began the year by learning about place value using concrete objects such as base ten and visual representations. They then applied this knowledge to add and subtract one digit and two digit numbers. 

This term we have moved on to Shape and the children have been learning about different shapes and ways that shapes can be described and classified according to their sides, vertices, faces and lines of symmetry.

Enquiry lesson- Shape: classifying and sorting
