Year 4
Spring 1
Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope you all had a lovely and restful Christmas break and were able to enjoy some special time together as a family.
I would also like to say a huge thank you for the very kind cards and gifts I received before the holidays. They were truly appreciated and very thoughtful.
PE will continue to take place on Mondays and Thursdays, which remains the same as last term. Please ensure children come to school in appropriate PE kit on these days.
This term, our learning across the curriculum will be both exciting and challenging. In English, the children will be focusing on the text Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag, which will support their reading, discussion and writing skills. In Maths, we will begin learning about formal methods of multiplication and division, including long multiplication and the bus stop method.
Our Science topic will be Sound, where the children will learn about how sound travels, the ear, and how we hear. In Art, the children will be developing their skills in line drawing and exploring different techniques associated with this. In History, our learning will move on from the Anglo-Saxons and Scots to the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
During PSHE lessons this term, the class will be learning about puberty and how the body changes during this time. Please be aware that children may come home with questions linked to this learning. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss the content of these lessons further, I am more than happy to do so.
Homework will continue to include 17–21 minutes of TTRS practice each week, and this will now be supported with the addition of spelling homework.
As the weather continues to change, please ensure your child comes to school with appropriate clothing for the conditions, including warm coats where needed.
As always, if you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to email me, or speak to me briefly at the start or end of the school day.
Thank you for your continued support. I am very much looking forward to another busy and positive term ahead.

Autumn 1
Wow! What an amazing start to this year. It has been wonderful hearing all about your summer holidays and to begin to get to know everyone. I have been blown away by the positive attitude that everyone has returned with and can't wait for the rest of the year.
We will have forest school sessions every Friday this half term in the afternoon beginning on the 5th of September, so please ensure that you have all the correct clothing for this which has been sent to you in an email.
PE days for at least this half term will be Monday and Thursday.
The children will have regular homework this year which will be as follows:
- Reading at home 4 times a week and recording this in their reading record. The reading record must be brought into school each day and will be checked on a Friday.
- 17-21 minutes of TimesTables Rockstars per week which will be checked on a Friday. The children must complete this time on Garage.
- Once a term, each child will prepare a 2–3 minute presentation on a given topic. The first topic will be 'My favourite book'. Once a timetable has been finalised it will be sent out to you. I expect the first presentation to take place in early October.
- Once a term, there will be a project-based homework task that focusses on a foundation subject. More information will be given on this once it has been set.
